چکیده

A better understanding of species and population responses to thermal stress is critical predict changes in their distribution under warming scenarios. Seagrasses are a unique group marine plants that play fundamental roles environments provide vital ecosystem services. Nevertheless, previous studies on seagrass tolerance have focused exclusively handful species, with the majority these remaining virtually unexplored. Moreover, date, no study has compared response between northern southern hemisphere seagrasses. Here, we conducted comparative mesocosm experiments using four from (i.e. Mediterranean: Posidonia oceanica, Cymodocea nodosa) Australia: australis Zostera muelleri) as representative two different life strategies, i.e. climax (P. P. australis) pioneer (C. nodosa, Z. muelleri). Plants acclimatized conditions at ambient temperature 26 °C) during 5-week period, were exposed simulated heatwave 32 for 2 weeks. Measurements plant responses, including photo-physiology, morphology, pigment content, performed end exposure. Results showed had significant effects photosynthetic performances seagrasses while negatively impacted counterparts. Similarly, favored growth plants, but strongly inhibited development species. Furthermore, photo-physiological content results suggested dealt than Our provides more insights into field ecology yields potential implication future conservation restoration activities.

Final warming of the Southern Hemisphere polar

6 The final warming date of the polar vortex is a key component of 7 Southern Hemisphere stratospheric and tropospheric variability in spring 8 and summer. We examine the effect of external forcings on Southern 9 Hemisphere final warming date, and the sensitivity of any projected changes 10 to model representation of the stratosphere. Final warming date is cal11 culated using a temperature-base...

Global Warming and Northern Hemisphere Sea Ice Extent.

Surface and satellite-based observations show a decrease in Northern Hemisphere sea ice extent during the past 46 years. A comparison of these trends to control and transient integrations (forced by observed greenhouse gases and tropospheric sulfate aerosols) from the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory and Hadley Centre climate models reveals that the observed decrease in Northern Hemisphere...

Intensification of Northern Hemisphere subtropical highs in a warming climate

Semi-permanent high-pressure systems over the subtropical oceans, known as subtropical highs, influence atmospheric circulation, as well as global climate. For instance, subtropical highs largely determine the location of the world’s subtropical deserts, the zones of Mediterranean climate and the tracks of tropical cyclones. The intensity of two such high-pressure systems, present over the Nort...

Are reptile and amphibian species younger in the Northern Hemisphere than in the Southern Hemisphere?

A previous analysis of molecular phylogenies suggested that intraspecific diversification had occurred more recently in temperate-zone Northern Hemisphere reptiles and amphibians than in Southern Hemisphere taxa. Here, we test potential explanations for this pattern. We examined published phylogenetic analyses, derived from genetic sequence data, to generate two estimates of the age of species:...

Australian shelf sediments reveal shifts in Miocene Southern Hemisphere westerlies

Global climate underwent a major reorganization when the Antarctic ice sheet expanded ~14 million years ago (Ma) (1). This event affected global atmospheric circulation, including the strength and position of the westerlies and the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), and, therefore, precipitation patterns (2-5). We present new shallow-marine sediment records from the continental shelf of Aus...
